What Is the Tricuspid Valve?
The tricuspid valve regulates blood flow between the right atrium and the right ventricle of the heart. It ensures that blood flows in the correct direction as it moves through the heart toward the lungs. When the tricuspid valve is diseased—due to stenosis, regurgitation, atresia, or congenital conditions like Ebstein’s anomaly—blood flow can be disrupted, leading to backflow, reduced heart efficiency, and potentially heart failure.
While mild cases may sometimes be managed with medication, tricuspid valve disease usually requires surgical intervention, as the issue often stems from a mechanical dysfunction within the heart.
Tricuspid Stenosis
This occurs when the valve leaflets become stiff or thickened, preventing the valve from opening fully. As a result, blood flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle is obstructed.
Tricuspid Regurgitation
This condition arises when the valve does not close properly, causing blood to leak backward from the right ventricle into the right atrium during contraction.
Tricuspid Atresia
A rare congenital heart defect in which the tricuspid valve is missing entirely, preventing blood from flowing between the right atrium and ventricle.
Ebstein’s Anomaly
A congenital condition where the tricuspid valve is located lower than normal in the heart. This abnormal positioning leads to tricuspid regurgitation and decreased cardiac efficiency.
Tricuspid Valve Surgery
There are two primary surgical approaches:
Tricuspid Valve Repair
Tricuspid Valve Replacement
Determining the most suitable approach depends on multiple factors, including:
The type and severity of the valve disease
The specific anatomy of the valve
The patient’s overall health, age, and lifestyle
Global medical guidelines prioritize valve repair over replacement whenever feasible. This approach preserves the patient’s native valve, often resulting in better long-term outcomes and fewer complications.
Tricuspid valve repair can be performed through:
Traditional open-heart surgery
Minimally invasive endoscopic procedures
Robotic-assisted cardiac surgery, depending on the center’s expertise and patient-specific factors
Op. Dr. Mugisha Kyaruzi performs tricuspid valve repair operations with high success rates.
